The use of permanent dyes every 5 to 8 weeks or more was associated with a 60 percent increased risk of breast cancer for black women. An analysis of data pooled from 17 studies of personal hair dye use found no evidence of an increased risk of bladder cancer however some recent studies have suggested an increased risk of bladder cancer associated with the use of permanent hair dyes 12 14 whereas other studies have not.
On the basis of these data and previous findings it appears unlikely that the use of permanent hair dyes causes any important increase in risk of breast cancer. The risk of breast cancer did not increase with more frequent use longer duration of use or interval since first use.
